The meaning of disease is that it is a trauma of nature, it is an interior conflict which man has to own by trying to function within the physiology of a collective organism. I believe that the meaning of every disease is its reintegration within one of nature’s boundaries, whatever it may happen to be. This is the same space where Theodor von Marcius’s amazonian play is heading towards.
Walking through the jungle forests with Karamakate, the scientist discovers 2 worlds : the civilized one with its bases in a nature found in a continuous violent struggle with man, and the wild world, where the shaman has learned how to listen to nature and act in a complementary way as its extension, like a long tree branch looking above the future.
The most symbolic distinction that the movie ever makes referes to photography, which the shaman calls “chullachaqui”- a cultural avatar roaming around freely outside of time and above the world. This is the definition which Karamakate gives to image în general, but specifically to photography. What this means is that all that we, the civilized world, multiply as image and publicity is to a jungle thought seen as an empty spirit aimlessly and endlessly going astray.
I have one single conclusion and that is that the inocence of arhaic cultures traverses time în much healthier ways than certain contemporary political systems , which tend to become progressively autodestructive.
